It may not seem the most obvious location to film scenes for the latest and probably last Indiana Jones movie, but its casting director had no doubts he made the right choice of the mysterious English castle on the North Sea coast.

The fifth instalment of the much-loved movie franchise launches this week, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, with the UK heavily involved in the film’s locations.

Among the sites used was Bamburgh Castle, and for those who have never been to the north east tourist hotspot, you may recognise it from the Netflix production, The Last Kingdom, some of the series’ battle scenes filmed at the beach in the shadow of the castle.

It is recognised as one of the finest castles in the UK, standing guard over the Northumberland coastline on a rocky plateau for over 1400 years.

"We narrowed it down to a couple of options and when we brought our director [James Mangold] he immediately knew that Bamburgh was the right choice,” said location director Duncan Broadfoot, speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle.

“We had two key hooks that we were looking for that would tie us into a specific location," he said. “One was a castle – we needed a castle that had a nice entrance, grand court yard and grand interior space and we found that in Bamburgh.”

Hollywood superstar Harrison Ford was seen taking in the sights of Northumberland near the castle in-between shooting scenes, the then 78-year-old enjoying a 30-mile cycle ride as he filmed in the region.
