Israeli Firm Launches 3D Printed Meat Cuts

Redefine Meat is making its vegan product available for the first time in restaurants in Europe.

Customers in European restaurants may soon be able to order 3D-printed steak substitutes. Israel-based Redefine Meat has rolled out its first whole cuts of plant-based "meat" and hopes to sell it to thousands of restaurants over the next year. Redefine Meat launched in 2018 and produced the world's first 3D printed plant-based steak the same year. It can “print” 10kg of plant-based meat, which aims to emulate the texture of real meat, every hour, according to the Financial Times.

Whole cuts are the money maker

Redefine Meat is coy about the exact make-up of its products but the FT reports they they are made from soy and pea protein, chickpeas, beetroot, yeast and coconut fat. Plant-based meat substitutes by producers like Beyond Meat and vegan restaurants are becoming increasingly popular internationally as consumers look to reduce their consumption of animal products.

However Redefine Meat is focusing on whole cuts as well as products that resemble ground-beef and sausages. "This is the money-maker. This is the reason we have meat," Reuters quoted CEO Eshchar Ben-Shitrit as saying.
