The wines of the Canary Islands, especially those from the popular island of Tenerife, still receive far too little attention in our part of the world. But away from the tourist hustle and bustle, great wines are produced on the volcanic soils under the cool Atlantic influence. And those from Bodegas Suertes dem Maruqes are attracting so much attention from critics and experts that they are sure to make a name for themselves among wine lovers. It was only in 2004 that the young Jonatan Garcia Lima, who had previously studied in Madrid, began to grow wine on his parents' vineyard, and in 2006 he started his own four walls. He had already owned parcels on the north side of the island, some with 100-year-old vines, since 1986, but the grapes were sold. However, with his own vineyard behind him, Jonatan Garcia Lima devoted himself passionately to viticulture and his first vintages were euphorically received by critics. And he seems to regard his wines as ambassadors for his homeland, as he relies exclusively on local, indigenous grape varieties such as Listan Blanco in his organically cultivated vineyards. Listan Negro or Castellana Negra. And these parcels in the northern part of the island can look back on over 600 years of viticultural history. They lie at up to 700 meters above sea level, which gives the wines a cool, exciting minerality. When working in the cellar, Jonatan Garcia Lima avoids any superfluous intervention in the winemaking process; everything that needs to be done is done by hand. The usual sulphurisation during bottling is also largely dispensed with. Only minimal quantities are used. The wines from Suertes de Marques could be described as unique, as they have a profound character on the one hand and a lively, fresh character on the other, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
