15 hectares in the best locations around Gols are cultivated by the Schmelzer winery, a large part of which is planted with the Zweigelt variety. The brothers Horst and Georg Schmelzer have been known as absolute specialists for this variety for many years. This is confirmed by the Falstaff red wine awards of the last 20 years, in the course of which they have continuously achieved top rankings. With the victory in 2005, the two managed to outdo the Zweigelt competition for the second time of 1999. Zweigelt also plays the leading role in the "Gols" blend. Here, the traditional varieties from Gols - Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent - are used to convey the typicality of the region in the form of a high-quality red wine aged in small oak barrels. The top blend made of Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Sauvignon is called "Barcaso".
However, the Schmelzer brothers also produce very remarkable sweet wines and fruity white wines. With the Welschriesling, they even became state and national winners in 2005, and with the Blaufränkisch in 2019 and the Grüner Veltliner in 2016, they became state winners. For years, the committed Schmelzers have also been attracting more and more attention from the international press.
